Born and raised in Minneapolis, and a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Shal has been creating films and animations since childhood. His first foray into advertising started as a campaign for Dockers that quickly found its way into a Super Bowl slot. Shortly after, a series of his spots for Sharpie won a TED Ads Worth Spreading award, as well as two ADDY’s.
Shal was tapped to direct the first ever broadcast campaign for Airbnb, which aired during the World Cup, and received extensive press coverage, including being the foundation for a cover-story in New York Magazine.
His films and spots, marked by a focus on visual motion, have been featured by the New York Times and screened at Lincoln Center.
Some selected clients of Shal's include Levi Strauss, Airbnb, MillerCoors, Janssen, Craftsman, and Lincoln Motors.
